Anne Arundel County Family Protection Initiative
The Family Protection Initiative (FPI) is a public–private partnership addressing gaps between due process ideals and the realities of families facing possible separation. FPI uses a comprehensive, universal model. Legal cases and fear destabilize children, families, communities, institutions, and businesses. In FY2026, FPI received $300,000 in public funds to support nonprofits providing legal assistance and crisis support.

In Maryland, a parent can choose a standby guardian to take care of their children in the event of mental incapacitation, physical debilitation, or an adverse immigration action. The parent does not lose any parental rights and has the power to revoke the standby guardianship at any time. The parent at all times keeps custodial rights.
The Standby Guardianship Project assists families with the process for free.
